Film on coal mining in Leipzig (2): Post-production and "Co-Workers"
Film on coal mining in Leipzig. Part 2: Post-production and "employees".
Coal mining: a topic that was and still is omnipresent in Leipzig. I made a time-lapse film about this in 2017. As part of an A-level project on climate change, I chose the topic of coal mining in Leipzig.
Post-production
For this project I used the following software.
- Adobe Premiere
- Adobe Lightroom Classic
- LRTimelapse
- Google Earth
For the soundtrack I also used the YouTube Audio Library for this project.
Google Earth Timelapse
The time-lapses from Google Earth were created in the Google Earth application. In 2017, there was a menu item in the Windows application for this, with which you could create a film from the existing, historical satellite recordings. Today, this seems to be possible in the Google Earth web app. However, I did not find a direct export option here when I was browsing.
"Co-Workers"
In the project, I also worked with a classmate. She helped me a little with the research, but I wrote the final text myself. She couldn't really help me with the film production, because I already had a relatively precise plan for the realisation of the project before I started, and it wouldn't have been helpful to have two people flocking around the locations.
In the end, I recorded the texts myself. A fellow student who had a relatively pleasant voice was supposed to do the voice-over. However, he got a bit stage fright when he had to speak the texts into a microphone and we were able to throw the recordings away.
Lessons Learned
What I took away from the film in the end was a deeper knowledge of the history of Leipzig and especially the surrounding area, new knowledge about satellite time-lapse and a nice cooperation with the Mining Technology Park. Last but not least, the importance of pre-production and the fact that for small film projects it is very pleasant to do (almost) everything myself 😉.
